Are Your Belongings Really Safe From Water? Find Out Now

    By Digital Guider | Insurance for Self Storage Units | 0 comment | 27 November, 2025 | 0

Here’s a surprising fact: around 25% of self-storage units face some form of water damage each year. That’s one in four! Yet, many people assume their stuff is safe just because it’s tucked away in a storage unit. Reality check: even a small leak or a sudden storm can cause serious damage to your belongings.

So, how do you actually protect your things—and your peace of mind? Let’s break it down.

    Water Damage Isn’t Always Obvious

When you think of water damage, you might picture a flooded unit or soaked boxes. But a lot of harm happens quietly. Humidity can warp wood furniture, ruin papers, or leave a musty smell on fabrics. A tiny leak from a neighboring unit? That can creep under boxes and silently ruin electronics or clothing.

Even in a climate controlled self storage unit, water isn’t completely off the table. These units maintain temperature and humidity, which is great—but they can’t stop a burst pipe or flooding in the building. So, relying on climate control alone isn’t enough.

    Why Insurance Is a Game-Changer

While storing your items in a unit seems safe, unexpected water damage can strike anytime. That’s why many renters choose Extra Space storage insurance, a policy specifically designed to protect belongings in self-storage facilities like Extra Space.

It’s not just a “nice to have”—it’s the safety net you didn’t realize you needed. What’s even better? Your rates stay the same across the country. No matter if your unit is in Miami, Chicago, or Seattle, the price is consistent.

And here’s the kicker: we don’t charge more for climate-controlled units. You can pick a unit that fits your items best without worrying about extra fees.

Climate-Controlled vs. Regular Units: What You Need to Know

Let’s clear up a common misconception. Some people think a climate-controlled unit magically makes their belongings immune to water. Not true. It reduces the risk of moisture damage from humidity and temperature swings but does little if water seeps in from the outside.

    Here’s a quick look:

    • Climate-Controlled Units: Keep temperatures and humidity stable. Ideal for electronics, documents, fabrics, and items sensitive to mold or warping.
    • Regular Units: Protect from basic elements but can be more vulnerable during storms, leaks, or floods.

The bottom line? Insurance is the real hero here. With proper coverage, you’re financially protected, no matter the type of unit.

    Trust Comes from Experience

Worried about whether your policy will actually pay out if disaster strikes? Don’t be. SanpNsure’s storage insurance policies are underwritten by The Hartford Insurance Company, a name with over 200 years of experience and an A+ rating. That means you’re backed by financial stability and a track record of handling claims reliably.

    Nationwide, Simple, and Transparent

One of the best parts: this coverage is licensed nationwide. That means no matter where you are, you can access the same rates and benefits. And getting coverage is simple. Enter your unit information, pick your coverage amount, and you’re done. Claims are straightforward, and you can switch units without extra hassle.

No hidden fees, no surprise charges—just clear protection for your stuff.

Easy Steps to Reduce Risk Even More

While insurance has your back, a few proactive steps can keep water damage at bay:

    • Use waterproof containers: Keep important items in plastic bins instead of cardboard.
    • Raise items off the floor: Use pallets or shelving to avoid direct contact with potential water.
    • Inspect your unit: Check for leaks, cracks, or water stains when moving in.
    • Regular visits: If possible, pop in after storms to make sure all is well.

These small habits, paired with insurance, create a strong safety net.

Why SnapNsure Makes Sense for Your Storage

SnapNsure provides real storage unit insurance for both fixed and mobile units, covering fire, water damage, smoke, burglary, and vandalism.

Policies usually cover a few thousand dollars up to $5,000 per unit, but SnapNsure goes big—up to $25,000 per unit. Deductibles are simple: $100 for policies up to $10,000 and $500 above that. Optional add-ons like flood or storm protection give extra peace of mind.

SnapNsure also includes a photo-archive tool so you can prove what’s inside your unit if disaster strikes. Nationwide licensing, consistent pricing, even for climate controlled self storage, makes it easy to protect your stuff wherever it lives.

When You Need Peace of Mind

Think about it: your belongings represent years of effort, memories, and money. A single leak or burst pipe can undo all that. But with Extra Space storage insurance through SnapNsure, you’re protected against water damage and other covered risks.

And remember, climate-controlled units are a bonus for sensitive items, but insurance is what truly shields you from financial loss. With The Hartford’s backing, nationwide coverage, and consistent pricing, you don’t have to gamble on your things.

It’s simple. Protect your belongings, prevent stress, and know that if water strikes, you’re covered. Get your SnapNsure policy today and safeguard your storage in minutes!
