5 Common Pitfalls to Avoid When Selecting Mobile Storage Insurance

    By Digital Guider | storage rental | 0 comment | 30 April, 2025 | 0

Did you know that mobile storage units have seen a steady rise in popularity over the past few years? With more people relocating, downsizing, or just needing temporary space, mobile storage offers an easy and flexible option. But while people are quick to rent a unit, they often overlook one important step—getting the right insurance to protect their stored belongings.

Whether you’re using mobile storage during a move, renovation, or just to free up space, it’s important to choose proper coverage. Here are five common mistakes people make when selecting mobile storage insurance—and how to avoid them.

1-Not Checking What the Policy Actually Covers

Many people assume that mobile storage insurance will automatically cover everything in every situation. That’s not always the case.

Some policies cover damage caused by fire or theft but may exclude water damage, mold, or rodent infestation. Others may have limitations on high-value items like electronics or collectibles. If your items fall outside the standard coverage, you may not be able to file a claim if damage happens.

Before you purchase coverage, take time to review the details. Know what’s covered and what’s not. If your mobile unit is sitting outside for weeks or months, make sure the policy covers weather-related damage too.

2-Underestimating the Value of Stored Items

Another common issue is not insuring your belongings for their full value. People often choose the lowest coverage option just to save money. But if your stored items are worth more than the limit of your policy, you’re at risk of a financial loss.

Take a few minutes to list what’s inside your unit. Add up the estimated replacement value—not the used value—of your items. This includes furniture, electronics, and personal items. Once you have that number, choose a plan that provides enough protection.

Storage rental services often offer flexible options, so you can choose a plan that matches the true value of what you’re storing.

3-Picking Insurance Based Only on Price

It’s tempting to grab the cheapest option. We all want to save money. But with insurance, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. In fact, it could mean less coverage, higher deductibles, or more exclusions.

Instead of looking only at the cost, compare what’s included in the coverage. Does it cover all risks that matter to you? Will you be able to replace your items without spending extra out of pocket?

A slightly higher premium could mean better coverage, faster claims, and fewer surprises.

    4-Ignoring the Fine Print

Let’s be honest—insurance policies are not the most exciting thing to read. But not reading the fine print could cost you later.

For example, some policies may only apply if the mobile storage unit is kept on private property. Others may require you to secure the unit with a specific type of lock. If you miss those details, your claim could be denied even if the damage wasn’t your fault.

Always take time to scan through the conditions. If something is unclear, reach out and ask. It’s better to ask now than to be surprised later.

    5-Forgetting to Compare Coverage Options

Every insurance policy has its own set of terms. Some are more flexible than others. You might have the option to choose add-ons or extended protection for specific types of risks—like water damage, natural disasters, or vandalism.

If you’re storing your belongings in a mobile unit for an extended time, or in an area known for certain weather conditions, this added coverage could make a big difference.

Also, if you’re storing items on a rental property, it’s smart to get a rental property insurance quote to check if there’s overlapping coverage—or if you need a separate policy altogether.

Always compare what’s available. Reliable storage rental services often work with insurers who offer several plan options. Pick the one that suits your storage length, item value, and location.

    Don’t Risk It—Protect What’s Yours

Getting mobile storage insurance isn’t something to take lightly. A small mistake now can turn into a big loss later. Whether it’s underestimating your item value or overlooking what your policy actually covers, it’s important to get the details right.

That’s where SnapNsure makes a real difference. Their plans are simple, affordable, and designed specifically for mobile and self-storage situations.
